Generation Me Considered the Most Stressed Generation Yet

Nothing consumes a person, a family, a community, or a society like loneliness, hopelessness, and fear. Depression, â€Å"characterized as a combination of symptoms that interfere with a persons ability to work, sleep, study, eat, and enjoy once-pleasurable activities†(What is Depression? par 4), affects a staggering 6.3 million people, as Jean Twenge clarifies in Chapter 4 of her book, Generation Me. Twenge states that â€Å"the lifetime rate of major depression is ten times higher, between 15% and 20%† than previous generations (105). What brings about such apprehension, though? We are thriving in an ever expanding advancement in technology, are we not? We are offered opportunities and earn significantly more money than ever before. Despite all†¦show more content†¦Pressure to fit into a crowd but still stand out makes our life nothing but a contradiction. For children like who have dealt with a family division, our chances of creating strong relationships i n our futures are hurt. With â€Å"more than 4 times as many Americans describing themselves as lonely†, Generation Me has itself faced with a large disadvantage when undergoing stress. With the pressure that our generation endures, we are divided amongst the mentally stable and well, the not so stable. For a large portion, almost one million people each year, it has resulted in many lives lost. â€Å"Suicide is the third leading cause of death for people age 15 to 24† with â€Å"someone committing suicide every 18 minutes in the United States† (Twenge 108). It can be challenging to understand why someone would choose to take their own their life. â€Å"Suicide is a desperate attempt to escape suffering that has become unbearable† (â€Å"Suicide Prevention† par 3). With so many unrealistic expectations, no wonder it is so hard for us. Many people who face suicidal thoughts are too scared of mentioning their feelings to others, although most do not realize that quite a few individuals around them are facing the same anxiety. Just recently, my close friend Chris began showing signs of possible suicidal actions.
